In the Bible we are given a ring-side seat at the moment where King David casts the vision for the building of God's temple in Jerusalem. In his speech he pledges both his kingly and personal wealth. He was holding nothing back, setting the example for everyone else, the leader went first. Then he asked the other leaders and people a question:
"Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today?"
In 1 Chronicles 29 we discover that the people gave:
Willingly (v5,17)
Generously (v2-3,14)
Joyfully (v9)
Thankfully (v13)
Expectantly (v19)
The amounts given by the nation to the building of Gods house were staggering!
Not equal gift but equal sacrifice
But as the Apostle Paul later tells the believers in Corinth it isn't about how much each of us give but the willingness to give what we have.
For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.2 Corinthians 8:12 New International Version (NIV)
It's the willingness that makes the difference. By sacrificing together great things can be achieved.
